  Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, has the earnestness of a school play, but lacks the cinematic sweep of the director’s most accomplished film, Lagaan.Sadly, the real-life patriotic struggle gets lost in translation to the big screen. Even while you admire the courage and fervour behind this little-known revolution, a part of you remains unmoved. Gowariker sets up the background of the Chittagong Uprising painstakingly, yet forgets that one most important detail – he fails to infuse life and passion into his film. Under his heavy-handed approach, most of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey turns into just what you dreaded – a dry history lesson.I’m going with two out of five for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. It’s a noble effort that gives you a glimpse of forgotten history. But this hero has feet of clay.

  The high point of Gowariker's film is the fact that it combines high-octane drama with a high degree of restraint. The film unfolds like a relentless thriller with loads of action involving the band of revolutionaries as they go about their bloody business. Yet no one hollers the national anthem at youor grows hysterical with patriotic pulp. Instead, the director gently salutes the spirit of nationalism in a seminal scene where the bunch of teenage revolutionaries discover the hypnotic allure of a hymn like `vande mataram' while resting under the shade of the trees in their village. And the fact that it all begins with a bid to get back their football field makes the teenage uprising even more endearing. Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey helps you rediscover forgotten heroes -- and a forgotten sentiment -- at a time when a scam-tainted nation needs to celebrate the national sentiment the most.

  While I may not be able to comment on whether Gowariker has been faithful to the book or tampered with it or implemented some changes, which may be necessary to suit the tastes of the present-day spectators and make it more palatable, I would definitely like to say that what comes across on screen is very absorbing, truly informative and exceptionally inspiring. Final word? The expectations from KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY are minimal, but you can't overlook the fact that it's a genuinely honest effort that needs to be encouraged and appreciated. On the whole, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, based on the Chittagong rebellion, is an enlightening experience of a poignant, but little-known chapter in history. It's a film of immense significance which evokes a colossal patriotic fervor.

  Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is a clumsily structured, unevenly paced film, with very few moments to match up to the aforementioned scene. The first half unfolds like a school play -- all stilted dialogue-delivery, self-aggrandising smug smiles , and white kurtas borrowed from a Rin commercial -- and, quite frankly, like any school staging which doesn't feature a relative on-stage, the film lulls you to perplexed sleep. It is the second half of the film that then hits you straight in the solar plexus, because after that soporific opening, here we have wall-to-wall action. The Chittagong Uprising makes for a smashing narrative, and Gowariker plays it loyally enough. It isn't subtle and the direction is straight out of the Jingoism Manual, but because the story itself has such immense meat, it's hard to not get sucked in as you watch it unfold.

  In fact up to the interval, the film totally lacks a pulse. Thankfully, the action jump-starts the narrative.The second half has more urgency and momentum and climaxes in the inevitably tragic but rousing finale. However, here too the chase and gunfights become repetitive and I found myself distracted by the thinly sketched British characters and the mediocre extras who play them.Ashutosh Gowariker is Bollywood’s most earnest historian and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is a noble attempt at restoring glory to long-forgotten heroes but honestly, I felt more charged and patriotic in the last 40 minutes of Lagaan than I did in this entire film. I’m going with two and a half stars.

  Generally, a biopic isn’t invited to a Bollywood party, since it could frighten away too many other guests. However, out here a freedom fighter’s life kicks down the front door and sits at the head of the table. If you don’t care to know more about him, it’s your loss entirely.The film’s second-half is far more engrossing as Gowariker cuts to the chase, whereas earlier he somewhat hobbles in establishing the mileu, the welter of characters and a needless lip-synced girl-bonding ditty. Indeed, the most stirring and moving sections of the film focus on the young men inspired by the spirit of nationalism to leave home and comfort for their convictions.Chak de Gowariker! His Raashi, his heart is back in the right place.. and how.

  A film on the freedom struggle, which this is, ought to have a high dose of patriotism but it wouldn’t be wrong to say that in this film, that’s almost completely missing! Even the high energy level one associates with a film on patriotism, is absent. In fact, the drama proceeds so half-heartedly that it rarely evokes a feeling of love for the country, in the minds of the viewers. One more reason for this is probably because the writers have hardly cared to show the atrocities perpetrated by the Englishmen on Indians. On the whole, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey will meet with a disastrous fate at the box-office. It has opened to dull houses and it has nothing to warrant a pick-up.

  This is perhaps Ashutosh's shortest film, but it still seems very long. He takes his own sweet time to arrive at the film's central plot. The entire first half is spent in forming the team and planning the attacks. Although it was necessary to do so, he goes very deep into it. There is hardly any movement in the story. It's only post interval that the narrative gains momentum. The riveting fight scenes keep you engrossed. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY has its moments. You feel for Surjya Sen and his team members. Almost the entire second half has poignant moments that keep you hooked.Overall KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY isn't a bad film but its slack pace refrains it from being a memorable film. Not worth 'playing jee jaan sey'.
