Despite the occasionally impressive animation, 'Toonpur Ka Superrhero' is an ordeal to sit through because it has neither the visual wizardry nor the engaging storytelling that recent films like 'How To Train Your Dragon' and 'Toy Story 3' have allowed us to embrace. Even if our local animation films can’t look as slick as their American counterparts, there’s no excuse for sloppy writing and singularly unimpressive characters.I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Kireet Khurana’s 'Toonpur Ka Superrhero'. It’s a solid waste of time, and I won’t insist that you subject your kids to this!

On the whole, TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO is a delightful and endearing kiddie movie. It has an engaging narrative [second half mainly], neat performances and adorable animated characters. The real stars are the technicians [who created the animated characters], the director [Kireet Khurana] and of course, its lead man [Ajay Devgn] who pulled off a technically remarkable achievement of having humans and animated film characters interact with each other. Revisit your childhood while watching this one!

First things first. Indian animation comes of age and how! The film which is being billed as India's first animation feature does actually live up to its reputation. For not only is the animation artistic and classy, a living breathing Ajay Devgn too manages to be in perfect sync with the paper and pen characters. Generously sprinkled with easily identifiable characters and a story that reiterates the need for families to bond and good to prevail over evil -- sweet, simple, succinct kiddy themes -- Toonpur Ka Superrhero is great goodwill-hunting Christmas fare. Enjoy the upmarket animation and Bollywood's adventurism into brand new territory.

Toonpur Ka Superrhero, touted as India's first live action-animation film, is the singularly charmless adventure of a Bollywood star,Will children who have imbibed the brilliance of a Toy Story 3 or Up, be amused by this? I'm not so sure. Since we can't beat Hollywood animation in budget and scale, the only way to do it is content and an emotional connect. Sadly Toonpur has neither. See it if you must.

Considering the state of 3D animation refuses to rise beyond semi-serviceable, Toonpur, despite a fun premise, fails to impress on a basic level. Kids are treated to far superior 2D/3D animation on television itself. It will take a lot more than this to attract their capricious attention to theatres.Going by its tacky finishing and detailing (what detailing?), the final product appears to be an intermediate draft of a work-in-progress file. No wonder not a single character from this portly, colourful bunch strikes as anything out of the ordinary. Flaws aside, the climatic twenty minutes are absolutely pleasurable. Akin to the thrill one gets out of arcade gaming, Devgn and the missus confront multiple-levels of challenge with childlike relish.Ultimately, the actors get it right. It's the toons that disappoint.

But if this is supposed to be India’s first live-action animation, top star-cast, Christmas weekend answer to Disney-Pixar, well then, it’s certainly not good enough, or it’s just a good effort at best. The film wants to impress yours. The human hero fights the cartoon villain as he moves up levels in a video game. It’s all pretty lame. The connect is somewhere lost. Sure, you don’t quite feel like the target audience of this film.Ever felt old watching, say the incredible Up, Kung Fu Panda, Despicable Me…. Why reinvent the wheel. I’d rather Devgn dived into a well-written, world-class Disney world instead.

The concept is fresh and reality segued with animation is a treat to watch. The film is not very amusing for the most part, and appears to have been deliberately dumbed down for a younger audience, but its short length becomes its strong point, packing enough punch to keep the kids interested till the end.At best, Toonpur is a kiddie flick that not many adult minds will appreciate. Let your young ones have fun this Christmas holiday. Go ahead and fix a date with the Devtoons.
