A terrific premise that translates poorly to the screen, Blindness fails because it lacks the vision to be truly eye-opening. At best two out of five for Blindness; this film isn't for the faint-hearted, go in armed with enough patience.

This is by no means an easy or entertaining movie to watch but for anyone brave enough to watch this film the filmmakers manage to show us what humanity is capable of. On the surface, this is a movie about what social rules would come into play if the world was rendered blind. What it manages to do is get us to open our own eyes to what we refuse to see each and every day. What other movie in recent times have you been able to say that about?

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, 'Blindness' is based on a novel by the Nobel Prize-winning Portuguese author José Saramago. What happens when an unnamed city is struck by a deadly epidemic of sightlessness and what if you are the only one to retain your eye-sight? The film is extremely thought provoking and displays well the varied human tendencies in times of extreme fear and crisis. The film's showcase of how its protagonist, one who is not blind, is actually the one to suffer the most as she can see the enormous disaster happening around her is simply remarkable.

Not a great film, mainly because it can't transcend -- and, indeed, lays bare -- the intellectual flimsiness of its source. But it is, nonetheless, full of examples of what good filmmaking looks like. For all its chin-rubbing, brow-furrowing attitudes, it does not, in the end, give you much to think about. But there is, nonetheless, a lot here to see.
